With over 400 bird species to watch at Villa Lapas, no doubt this is a birdwatcher's paradise. Birdwatching aficionados and pros from all over the world confirm this fact.

Leading TV channels, societies and publications such as Discovery Channel, Fodor's, National Geographic Society and the Audubon Society have showcased Villa Lapas as a prime spot for enthusiastic birdwatchers throughout the world.

There is plenty for the passionate birdwatcher to look for at Villa Lapas, including the beautiful and greatly endangered Scarlet Macaw, the yellow-billed Cotinga, and the Black-hooded Antshrike. The nearby Carara Biological Reserve is one of the only two spots in the country (besides the Osa Península) where you can still see the Scarlet Macaw. Our highly specialized, knowledgeable guides will help you spot all the exciting birds that the region has to offer.

Which is the best hour / season for birdwatching?
The answer to this question depends on a wide variety of factors: The current season, the habits of a particular bird species, and/or the odds of a given bird species to be seen. That said, dawn and dusk are the days of most activity for many birds (getting out from and coming back to roost) so these are often the best times to catch bird action.
What should/shouldn't I bring along for the Tour?
You will most likely bring photographic equipment along with you (camera and/or binoculars). Those with professional equipment (tripods, special lenses, etc) should use a bag or backpack that is easy to carry. Try to bring only the absolute necessary gear though - as in all tours, the lighter your carrying weight, the better.
What should I wear?
You should wear comfortable clothing for the tour. Most of our clients do the tour in shorts, T-shirt and running shoes. Long pants are fine, but skirts or dresses are not. Bug repellent and / or sunblock are also recommended however we suggest these to be applied prior to starting the tour rather than carrying them along. Closed-toe shoes are recommended however strap-on sandals are acceptable. You may not do the tour in bare feet. During Green Season (May -November) lightweight rain gear is recommended.
How do I book a Birdwatching Tour?
This and all of our Villa Lapas tours can be booked at the Front Desk upon your arrival. If you are only staying one or two days be sure to book in advance though, as tours tend to fill up quickly. - FREE if you book online now »
Which are my odds of spotting a certain bird?
That will depend on the odds of that bird's appearance, the time of day, the population of that given species and how rare/endangered that particular bird is. We can make no guarantees that you will see any particular bird during your stay, specially concerning the rarest species in our Birdwatcher's List. Our specialized guides will assist you with detailed information about the most frequent, easy-to-spot bird species in the area.
